Your Freediving Instructor
Ray Ko
Sometimes people don't change without hitting a wall. 7 years ago, I got diagnosed with fibromyalgia, left my high paying six-figure USD job in a big company and discovered freediving. Since then, I've never looked back.
Now, as an instructor (certified by one of the top educators in the world, Oli Christen, Head of Education at Molchanov) and Founder of Freediving Nomad, I feel honored to provide my students with an opportunity to experience firsthand the life-changing wonders of freediving that I personally have experienced. Besides, I'm also a certified breathwork instructor and yoga teacher.

FREEDIVING LOCATION
Why Learn at Xiaoliuqiu, Taiwan?
Xiaoliuqiu is a special little island. It has
good diving conditions year-round and a
near 100% chance of seeing sea turtles
during your course. Plus everything on this small island is within five minutes of each other, so you can actually relax and escape the city chaos while learning (Ray lives on this island too). Remember, it's about learning how to relax and dive safely rather than pushing your limits to dive deeper.
FROM OUR STUDENTS
Testimonials
Affordable Stay & Freediving Mastery
I just spent 3 incredible weeks living and freediving with Ray on Xiaoliuqiu and I'm already looking for a chance to go back. The backpacking bunks provided an affordable, comfortable, and very clean option so that I could extend my visit without stressing about cost, and the huge common area with tatami for yoga, communal coworking space, and fast wifi made this trip so seemless and enjoyable.
People warned me that the island was small, but Ray and his amazing wife Sheila were phenomenal hosts. They showed me all the best restaurants and local grocery options, and in general helped me live like a local while I was on XLQ for nearly a month (and I could have happily stayed longer!)
And of course Ray is an incredible freedive instructor. He's extremely knowledgable, patient, and fun. I arrived as a beginner to this amazing sport, and left knowing I can dive with any intermediate group confidently and safely thanks to his teaching.
Fun, Food, and Freedom
I came into this experience with no expectations, except for: have fun and stay underwater for longer than you normally can.
I left with so much more than words can even describe. The experience was spiritual, fun-filled, mind-altering, and the most at peace I have felt in a really long time.
HUGE shoutout to Ray for providing constructive criticism, a tour of the island (including lots of delicious food), and all the proper equipment you will need for your stay.
I cannot wait to head back into Xiaoliuqiu and dive again. HIGHLY recommend this experience.
Trusted Teacher, Safer Freediving
Ray is an amazing teacher who I trusted and felt safe to dive with and is at the top of his field in what he does.
His expertise, knowledge and patience in teaching me gave me a good foundational understanding of freediving to begin with from the theory to the practical, tips on how to reach my depths and goals and tips to stay safe and injury prevention along the way.
I would recommend him to anyone looking to get into freediving or those looking to advance there skills in freediving.
Thanks again Ray for everything it really has helped and is much more valuable then just getting an accreditation.
FAQs
You might be new to freediving, don't worry, we will get your questions answered.
Is freediving dangerous?
Freediving does have risks, but most accidents happen to untrained divers or those ignoring safety protocols—proper training makes a significant difference. (In my years of teaching, the worst thing that's ever happened to me was just an ear infection and even this happened because I didn’t follow preventative measures.
I don’t have freediving equipment and don’t know which to buy
Don't worry about equipment—we provide everything you need for the course, and I recommend waiting until after so you'll know exactly what you need and avoid expensive beginner mistakes like buying the wrong fins that don’t suit your needs. After the course, I'll personally guide you on choosing what's right for you and all our students will get 10% discount on Molchanovs gear purchased through us.
I can’t hold my breath for long, can I still take the course?
That's exactly why you should take a proper course—you've never been taught HOW to hold your breath properly. Many of my students go from 20 seconds to 2 minutes in just one hour. This journey is made even easier for you with yoga practice, ice baths, and sound baths to help calm your body—practices most freediving courses don't include. All because I care about your safety. (I want to emphasize holding your breath is not that hard once you are TAUGHT how.)
Why do you teach Molchanovs instead of AIDA or PADI?
While I've been AIDA and PADI certified too, I choose Molchanovs because their curriculum combines the most current techniques from top freediving educators with ongoing education programs that help students progress safely beyond basic certification.
Transport and Accommodations?
You're welcome to arrange your own. If you need help to save some hassle, I can help arrange your transport for you from Taipei HSR Station until your scooter in Xiaoliuqiu. For accommodations, I can help you source a suitable one for your budget whether that is luxury, moderate or budget-friendly. Just let me know. We even provide on-site accommodations which are simple and clean, for various budgets.
What if I don’t pass the freediving certification requirements?
Don't worry—everyone learns at their own pace even I didn’t pass after my first course ended, you can come down to Xiaoliuqiu to complete them for an additional fee. Just let me know in advance or you can approach another Molchanovs instructor.
What language is the course taught in?
Though I am proficient in conversational Chinese, I am not proficient at teaching freediving in Chinese. Thus the course will be 100% in English. Chinese-language manuals can be provided if needed.
