I've been laid off three times in my career and fired once, but being laid off by Deutsche Bank changed my life for the better. I'm no longer monetarily rich, but I've found true wealth underwater and am immensely grateful for my free-diving journey.
A man has revealed that getting laid off from a successful job in finance has changed his life 'for the better' - and says while he is no longer rich, he found 'true wealth' in his new life.
Freediving, the art of diving underwater in one breath, is one of the world’s fastest-growing sports. Here’s how an island where many don’t know how to swim became one of the sport’s meccas.
About the surge in popularity of freediving in Taiwan and my journey into freediving.
I chat with Eddy, owner of Eddy's Cantina in Tienmu, Taipei about my freediving journey, UFC 264, life on Xiaoliuqiu and my recently launched podcast, The Total Beginner Freedive Podcast.
"This week's of the Hong Kong #1 Podcast episode is with Raymond Ko, a freediving instructor based in Taiwan. Scuba diving and freediving, yes there is a difference! Breathing recommendations, the ability to hold your breath for up to eleven or more minutes. In addition to the health benefits of the meditative state while freediving. "
Wow Taiwan is a delightful program with the right amount of humour, fun, excitement and information on where to go or what to eat in Taiwan!
Special Thanks to Asuka Lee and Ray

Well, here's the episode that you shouldn't miss! Learn from the expert, that's what I say. -Gen
Ray Ko left his job in Finance to move to a small island off the coast of Taiwan to teach free diving. We learned a lot about his new island life and got our own mini free diving lesson.
ICRT's Trevor Tortomasi speaks with Ray about the different kinds of diving, ocean stories, sea life, and pushing the limits of one's own diving potential.
Raymond Ko shares his journey to wellness from Finance to Freediving. Having traded 20 years in an investment banking career, chasing the dream of early retirement, Raymond soared his way to financial wealth and enjoyed the luxuries that came with it.
After an unexpected downturn of events including an 8 year divorce and custody battle, Raymond was left poorer in his health, wealth and relationship. Upon trying to put his life back together, an unexplainable calling led him on a journey into freediving.
Raymond is a Freediving Instructor and Content Creator based in Taiwan, teaching people the art of freediving.
In this episode, Raymond shares insights into:
Diagnosed with fibromyalgia in 2015, Ray was suffering. Not just from the physical effects, but also because of the crushing stress of a job in finance.
After over 20 years chained to an equity trading desk at investment banks around Asia, Ray's life changed dramatically in early 2019 when he took his first freedive course. He fell in love with the art of one breath diving immediately.
As of 2021, Ray is living virtually pain free, and he credits much of this to becoming a freedive instructor and how it has transformed his life - it's meditative effects, being in the ocean almost everyday, daily doses of sun and low impact exercise has dramatically contributed to improving his wellness.
This is Ray's story.
After I graduated from university, I embarked on what I've been programmed to do, pursue a well-paying career and starting a family. I spent 20 years basically handcuffed to a desk and wasn't able to fulfill my desire to see the world. Since starting freediving I've dived in Taiwan, Palawan (Philippines), Gili Air and Bali (Indonesia), Koh Tao (Thailand) and Las Vegas, San Diego and Redondo Beach in USA, so hopefully it continues to be a self-fulfilled prophecy....
